Cabauw is one of the main facilities of the Dutch Ruisdael Observatory located midway between the cities of Rotterdam and Utrecht, and managed by KNMI. Over 100 researchers from 18 countries worldwide participated in CINDI-3, operating 32 UV-VIS DOAS instruments to compare and intercalibrate measurements of air pollutants and to support the validation of earth observation satellite measurements from space-borne instruments such as Sentinel-5p/TROPOMI and Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5. CINDI-3 is the third intercomparison campaign of this kind. The overall campaign planning and coordination was carried out by a steering committee, led by BIRA-IASB (Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy) and KNMI, coordinating the CINDI-3 intercomparison schedule and all additional activities such as the mobile and aircraft observations. The main science objectives of CINDI-3 are the following: * To assess the consistency of slant column measurements of several key target species (NO2, ozone, O2-O2 and HCHO) of relevance for the validation of S5P and the future ESA atmospheric Sentinels, through coordinated operation of a large number of DOAS and MAXDOAS instruments from all over the world. * To study the relationship between remote-sensing column- and profile-measurements of NO2, HCHO and ozone and reference in-situ concentration measurements of the same species. * To investigate the horizontal representativeness of MAXDOAS measuring systems in view of their use for the validation of satellite tropospheric measurements featuring ground pixel areas in the range of 25-50 km2. De derde CINDI-3 campagne (Cabauw Intercomparison of Nitrogen Dioxide measuring Instruments) vond plaats tussen 21 mei en 24 juni 2024 op het Cabauw Atmospheric Research Station. Cabauw is een van de belangrijkste faciliteiten van het Nederlandse Ruisdael Observatorium, gelegen halverwege tussen de steden Rotterdam en Utrecht, en beheerd door het KNMI. Meer dan 100 onderzoekers uit 18 landen over de hele wereld namen deel aan CINDI-3, waarbij 32 UV-VIS DOAS-instrumenten om metingen van luchtverontreinigende stoffen werden vergeleken en geinterkalibreerd, om de validatie van satellietmetingen van aardobservatie satelliet instrumenten zoals Sentinel-5p/TROPOMI en Sentinel-4 en Sentinel-5 te ondersteunen. CINDI-3 is de derde vergelijkingscampagne in zijn soort. De algemene planning en coördinatie van de campagne werd uitgevoerd door een stuurgroep, onder leiding van het BIRA (Koninklijk Belgisch Instituut voor Ruimte-Aeronomie) en het KNMI, die het CINDI-3-vergelijkingsschema en alle aanvullende activiteiten zoals de mobiele observaties en vliegtuigobservaties coördineerde. De belangrijkste wetenschappelijke doelstellingen van CINDI-3 zijn de volgende: * Het beoordelen van de consistentie van de schuine kolommetingen van verschillende belangrijke doelsoorten (NO2, ozon, O2-O2 en HCHO) die relevant zijn voor de validatie van S5P en de toekomstige atmosferische Sentinels van ESA, door middel van een gecoördineerde werking van een groot aantal DOAS- en MAXDOAS-instrumenten van over de hele wereld. * Het bestuderen van de relatie tussen teledetectiekolom- en profielmetingen van NO2, HCHO en ozon en referentie in-situ concentratiemetingen van dezelfde soort. * Onderzoek naar de horizontale representativiteit van MAXDOAS-meetsystemen met het oog op hun gebruik voor de validatie van satellietmetingen in de troposfeer met pixelgebieden op de grond in het bereik van 25-50 km2.
