  • An important variable to calculate local temperatures is the Sky View Factor (SVF) which is the fraction of sky visible from the ground. The SVF depends on the height of the obstacles in the surroundings of a given location. The goal is to capture small features like houses and trees throughout the Netherlands at a very high resolution. This dataset comprises the Sky View Factor of The Netherlands at 0.5 meter resolution raster based on Actual Height Model of the Netherlands (AHN2) elevation dataset.   • Degree days are determined by the effective daily mean temperature (Teff). Teff is calculated with the daily mean temperature (TG) and the daily mean windspeed (FG). Teff = TG - 2/3 * FG. Degree days = sum of the days with (max[(14 - Teff),0]).

The MSR dataset results from a 30-year data assimilation run with 14 corrected satellite datasets as input, and is available on a grid of 1× 1 1/2° for the time period (1978-2008). The fourteen total ozone satellite datasets are from the instruments TOMS (on the satellites Nimbus-7 and Earth Probe), SBUV (Nimbus-7, NOAA-9, NOAA-11 and NOAA-16), GOME (ERS-2), SCIAMACHY (Envisat), OMI (EOS-Aura), and GOME-2 (Metop-A).

  • The TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) is a weather forecast for an aerodrome or airport. At KNMI, the TAF is produced for the civil airports of Amsterdam/Schiphol (EHAM), Rotterdam/The Hague Airport (EHRD), Groningen/Eelde (EHGG), Maastricht/Aachen (EHBK), Lelystad Airport (EHLE) and Bonaire International Airport (TNCB). A minimum of 4 TAFs per field are produced per day (24 hours). Minimal, because the TAF can be amended or corrected. The validity of the TAF is 30 hours.   • This dataset contains backscatter profiles from the CHM15k ceilometer, a one-wavelength backscatter lidar operating at 1064 nm. It includes daily uncalibrated, unvalidated data reported by the instrument at five sites: Cabauw, De Kooy, Groningen Airport Eelde, Maastricht Aachen Airport and Vlissingen. Retrieved cloud base heights up to 3 layers, sky condition information and aerosol layer height, based on manufacturer algorithms are included. Vertical resolution 10 m, time resolution 12 s.

  • Instrumental observations of the weather have been regularly performed in the Netherlands since the end of the 17th century. An inventory was made of this period before 1854 at KNMI. The observations of the series available here appeared to have been carried out sufficiently regularly and long enough in succession.
